Hales Road Bridge Replacement

Westport, Connecticut

Services: Bridge, Demolition, Concrete
Clients Served: Government

Loureiro was awarded a technical and interesting project in the replacement of Hales Rd Bridge over Metro-North Railroad. The project entailed the complete removal of a 120-year old steel truss and timber deck superstructure and replacing the bridge with new Prestressed Box Beams. In addition, partial reconstruction of the substructure included pressure grouting the existing brown stone abutments, installation of 44 micro piles to support the new concrete abutments and new catenary support beams.

The project environment presented many obstacles in working in close proximity to active railroad tracks, catenary wires and Interstate 95. Throughout the project, Loureiro closely monitored the existing catenary towers for settlement that were in arms reach of the active new construction. Loureiro worked closely with Marino Crane and Siefert Assoc. to develop a unique gantry system for the complete removal of the old bridge as well as the installation of the eight Prestressed Box Beams. Upon completion local residents were eager to use Hales Rd Bridge again which had been closed by Connecticut DOT for over a year prior to Loureiro starting work.
