84 Lumber Emergency Evaluation

Plainville, Connecticut

Services: Structural Engineering
Client Served: Industrial

In the winter of 2011, after record breaking snowfall amounts accumulated on the roof of this large building, the structural roof purlins had a considerable deflection and the main roof frames supporting the roof purlins were starting to buckle. Loureiro was called to evaluate the condition of the structure and determined that the building was beginning to collapse. Within a few hours of our observation, we developed a shoring plan to support the building’s structural frame so the accumulating snow load could be safety removed.

After the building was shored we performed an analysis of the pre-engineered metal building and found that the design snow load for the building was below the Connecticut State Building Code minimum. Based on the analysis we developed a design scheme for reinforcing the building.

  • Immediate response to potential emergency conditions and building collapse
  • Developed and executed an immediate shoring plan
  • Design developed to reinforce the building
