Maple Street Sanitary Sewer Extension

Kent, Connecticut

Services: Wastewater
Client Served: Government

The Kent Sewer Commission is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town’s wastewater treatment plant and sewage collection system throughout the town center. Based on the results of prior investigations of several properties located along Maple Street Extension, it was obvious that many of the existing subsurface sewage disposal systems (SSDS) serving these properties were located within poor soils and/or a high groundwater table and were currently experiencing problems or were subject to eminent failure.

Loureiro conducted a detailed study and evaluation of the existing conditions including the town’s existing wastewater treatment and collection facilities and recommended that the existing sanitary sewer system be extended to serve the residential, commercial and industrial properties located along this vital corridor of the village center area to alleviate the problems that could not be remedied with simple repairs or replacements of the existing SSDSs. Loureiro worked closely with the Sewer Commission to acquire both federal grant and loan funds for the proposed sewer extension from USDA Rural Development.

Loureiro prepared a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) and an Environmental Report (ER) in support of the funding application. Loureiro also prepared the detailed design plans and specifications for the proposed sanitary sewer extension which included two alternatives; one for an all-gravity installation and another utilizing a single submersible sewage pump station. Both alternates included a railroad crossing. Loureiro will provide contract administration and construction monitoring services during the construction.
