To support a major Superfund remediation project, Loureiro Contractors, Inc. (LCI) constructed a new bridge to replace the existing structure, which could not support the heavy equipment loads required. The construction work had many challenges including working next to a river, protection of a 24” water main, protection and temporary support of an 18” critical gas main, and high voltage overhead power lines.
Construction of the footings and abutments required the use of a slide rail system to support the excavation and to protect the adjacent water and gas mains. One footing was founded on a prepared subgrade below the elevation of the riverbed and the other was founded on sloping bedrock requiring the use of rock anchors.
The bridge’s superstructure was constructed using four steel girders to support a 20’W x 75’L reinforced concrete deck and parapet walls. A critical lift plan was prepared for the installation of the four steel girders.
