Lockout/Tagout Authorized Employee:

Program duration is 2-hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates specific training requirements for the Control of Hazardous Energy, commonly referred to as lockout/tagout (LOTO). This program is designed to satisfy the training requirements in 29 CFR 1910.147 for Authorized Employees. Authorized employees are individuals who lockout or tagout machines or equipment in order to perform servicing or maintenance where unexpected startup could be hazardous.

Authorized employees will be able to:

  • Describe key components of 1910.147 and define the purpose and elements of the program
  • Recognize types and responsibilities of people involved with LOTO
  • Summarize elements that must be included in energy control procedures
  • Describe the use of each protective device
  • Describe the steps to safely apply energy shutdown and differentiate between tasks requiring LOTO and tasks that may be exempt from LOTO
  • Identify the training and inspection requirements
  • Recognize the key elements of the OSHA Control of Hazardous Energy Regulation
  • Demonstrate skills and ability to utilize machine specific procedures in locking out and verifying zero energy potential on selected machinery and verify accuracy and completeness of selected machine LOTO procedures

Successful completion of this course requires the learner to pass a written assessment (80% or greater) and be able to pass the hands-on skills session. The hands-on skills session allows learners to walk through a lockout/tagout procedure that contains the following information: identifying start up procedures, identification of LOTO points, determining what equipment to use for effective LOTO, verification of energy isolation and start up procedures.
