A large parts manufacturing facility engaged Loureiro Facility Services to provide annual cleaning plus concrete and tank integrity inspection services for chrome and cadmium cyanide plating line containments. The client relied on Loureiro’s HAZWOPER-trained employees to perform the work in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
The health and safety of the crew is paramount when working with hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and cyanide solutions. For this and each project, Loureiro prepared a project-specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP) that established the protocols and procedures its employees follow during the completion of the work. Specific emphasis on the preparation of decontamination facilities and activities, as well as the lock out/tag out (LOTO) of all potentially hazardous energy sources that exist within the plating containments are critical to worker safety, in a permit-required confined space situation.
The containment cleanings were originally classified as a permit-required confined space. Thus the initial entries were done under Confined Space Entry OSHA-regulated protocols, with technicians tied off to retrieval setups and respiratory protection. The client, under the direction of Loureiro’s Regulatory/Compliance team, was able to declassify the space as a non-permit-required confined space, thereby clearing the technicians to work in tandem anywhere in the containment, without the restriction of being tethered to a retrieval device. The results was greater productivity, without any risk to safety or the quality of the work completed.
Prior to Loureiro’s initial schedule of cleaning and concrete and tank integrity inspection of the containment sumps, the customer hadn’t been able to keep up with annual inspections, and was no longer in compliance. The client brought in new management at the same time Loureiro was requested to bring all the regulatory programs (including the containment sumps) back to compliance. The combination of Loureiro divisions, Facility Services and the overhauled Compliance/Regulatory team on the client side brought the customer up to 100% compliance, through their combined efforts.
