We Are Loureiro: Paul Robinson

July 28th, 2023

For Paul Robinson, land surveying is a family affair. The son of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor, some of Paul’s earliest memories are from the days when he and his siblings acted as his father’s workforce.

“A number of the young people who worked under my dad are now licensed land surveyors,” Paul says. “Land surveying is the type of profession that requires a sort of apprenticeship. You need to be willing to work from the bottom up to learn all of the fundamentals. You have to learn the right way. My father taught me, and many others, the right way.”

When it was time for Paul to go to college, he decided to pursue engineering, and earned a degree in Civil Engineering Technology from UMass Dartmouth. After college, he went to work for a construction firm near Boston, MA, completing projects for franchise restaurants and retail outlets. It was during this time that Paul’s father’s Land Surveying and Civil Engineering business had ramped up. The lure of the profession and a love for the outdoors brought Paul back to the family business. He earned his MA PLS license and ran the business, PN Robinson Associates, Inc., for many years.

In 2010 after some life and business changes, and after settling in Narragansett, RI, Paul decided to pursue his interest in real estate sales, and earned his RI Real Estate Sales license. He enjoyed serving many customers with his professional knowledge and skills to navigate the sometimes murky waters of selling and purchasing homes and property throughout Rhode Island. Surveying being in his blood, he continued working in the profession on a part time basis.

Flash forward to 2022, when new life and business changes arose, Paul once again came back to his roots and chose to jump back into the profession he knows best on a full time basis.

“One of the things I love about surveying, and one of the reasons I kept coming back to it, is that it is tangible. You put in effort and you can see the fruits of that labor,” Paul described when asked what continued to draw him back to the profession. “I think back on the history of the profession. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln were all surveyors. It’s an important profession and something to be proud of.”

And it’s the history of the profession that continues to amaze Paul. When out in the field retracing the work of surveyors from hundreds of years ago Paul can see, through the use of modern equipment, how incredibly accurate the original surveying techniques were. Despite using methods that have largely gone out of style today, the work stands the test of time.

Since joining Loureiro in May 2022, Paul has been promoted to Survey Manager Paul where he is responsible for providing exceptional leadership to the Land Survey team, overseeing everything from performance management to career development, mentoring, staffing, and merit planning. Working closely with Loureiro's Professional Land Surveyors, he takes on project and technical oversight responsibilities for all activities within the Land Survey Division. He also works to forge connections within Loureiro, serving as the liaison between various divisions and corporate functions to ensure seamless collaboration and communication across the organization.

Paul's passion for his profession runs deep, fueled by the invaluable lessons passed down by his father and the rich history of surveying. This enthusiasm drives him to continually seek growth and learning, keeping him at the forefront of his field. He is driven by a desire to mentor and support others, and cherishes the opportunity to work and collaborate with colleagues, eagerly passing on his skills, knowledge, and invaluable lessons to those new to the profession.
