We Are Loureiro: Taryn Murasso

August 25th, 2023

Senior Engineer Taryn Murasso is a firm believer in self-growth. She’s always eying new challenges, whether that’s in her career, at the gym, or at home experimenting with new recipes.

“Something I have learned through experience is that anything that forces you out of your comfort zone presents an opportunity for growth,” says Taryn.

This overall philosophy led Taryn to pursue a career in engineering, combining her passion for math and science with her love for a good challenge, all while maintaining a focus on environmental issues. Reflecting on her journey, Taryn emphasizes the versatility of an engineering degree, recognizing the numerous career options it produces.

“Since graduating I’ve learned that there are so many different paths you can take with an engineering degree,” Taryn says. “There were times where I found what I was studying was quite difficult, but I continued to push through because I knew at the end of it, I’d be doing something I generally love that could bring me in a lot of different directions.”

As part of her role within Loureiro’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Division, Taryn has had the opportunity to work closely with the wastewater engineering team. Currently, she contributes her expertise to one of the largest wastewater treatment design projects the company has ever undertaken. Her role involves working directly with clients, a task she enjoys immensely.

“I have enjoyed helping our clients develop and implement approaches to compliance that are unique to their facility,” Taryn says. “Being able to physically see and experience the ways in which different facilities operate, and also being able to interface with clients and site personnel directly is what I enjoy most about the job”.

A typical day for Taryn involves assessing different processes and equipment from an environmental and regulatory standpoint, considering things like air emissions and waste streams. Additionally, she provides on-site training for clients and addresses any compliance issues that may arise, decoding regulations to help clients understand and comply with their requirements.

Recently, Taryn achieved a significant career milestone by passing her Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. She is on track to obtain her Professional Engineering stamp, which will allow her to approve Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) as well as Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), presenting her with more leverage in the field of engineering.

Her dedication and hard work were rewarded when she was promoted to Senior Engineer in July 2023. Taryn attributes much of her professional growth to her time spent providing on-site EHS support.

“I’ve gained a lot of confidence in that environment,” Taryn says. “Being allowed to work on my own - directly with clients - has allowed me to grow and feel more comfortable.”

Working at Loureiro has exposed Taryn to a wide range of disciplines, and she values the company's culture of encouraging its people to explore new areas of interest. It’s one of her favorite parts of working at the employee-owned firm - knowing that if she ever wants to be exposed to a new aspect of the work the firm does, all she has to do is ask.

To aspiring engineering students, Taryn's advice is simple yet powerful: Being curious and asking questions is the key to success in this field.

“Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.”

Taryn's journey exemplifies the rewards of pushing beyond comfort zones and embracing new challenges. With her unyielding commitment to self-improvement, she continues to make a positive impact in the field of engineering.
